What is a Bankart Lesion – What You Must Know?

Bankart Lesion is a condition that is seen in the shoulder joint, and dislocation is the commonest reason for that.

Dislocation is a type of orthopedic injury that occurs in the joints, and any of the joints could get affected. Such conditions are serious, and they often make it difficult to use the affected shoulder. Multiple causes of dislocations are there, and different severity levels are experienced based on that.

Shoulder dislocations are of two types namely anterior and posterior. In the case of anterior shoulder dislocation, the humeral head (ball) gets pushed forcefully towards the anterior glenoid labrum. When such a condition occurs, a glenoid labrum tear is on the cards. This condition is known as a Bankart Lesion.

Bankart repair is known to be the best treatment option for anterior glenoid labrum tear, and this is what we are going to discuss in the post.

In certain cases, a fracture may also be associated with a Bankart lesion, and for that, stabilization using Orthopaedic Implants and Instruments may be required.

Bankart Lesion – What It Is?

A Bankart tear or lesion is a common shoulder injury that happens when the labrum, a ring of cartilage around the shoulder socket, tears in the front. This type of shoulder injury is always accompanied by shoulder dislocation, especially anterior dislocation. Bankart lesions could also occur due to posterior shoulder dislocations but, this cause is less common.

When the dislocation occurs anteriorly, the humeral head is forced against the glenoid labrum, and it tears.

What Are the Causes of Bankart Lesions?

Bankart Lesions can stem from various causes, with high-impact injuries being the most common trigger. Some of the known causes of shoulder dislocations along with lesions include:

Car Accidents

High-intensity car crashes may cause shoulder dislocations along with anterior glenoid labrum tear.

Collisions while Playing Sports

Sportspeople are more prone to getting injured as the intensity of the body movements they make is high, and such movements put extra pressure on the body. The collision between players is also common, and that could dislocate the shoulder joint anteriorly causing labrum tear. Sportspeople who play football, hockey, and soccer are more prone to getting such an injury. Besides this, wrestlers and gymnasts are also at a risk for the same.

Falls

Tripping or falling from a height may also dislocate your shoulder causing Bankart Lesions.

Overuse Injuries

Overuse of the shoulder is another cause for Bankart Lesions that is commonly seen in athletes who play volleyball, baseball, tennis, cricket, and weightlifters.

Loose Ligaments

Hereditary issues cause some people to be born with loose ligaments, and such people have loose joints. Thus, joint injuries including dislocations are common and that could also result in anterior glenoid labrum tear.

What Are the Symptoms of Bankart Lesions?

Some of the common symptoms noticed in Bankart Lesions include:

  • Pain
  • Shoulder Instability and Weakness
  • Limited Range of Motions of the Affected Joint
  • Popping or Grinding Sound during the Shoulder Movement

How Are Bankart Lesions Diagnosed?

Bankart Lesions are accompanied by shoulder dislocations, and physical examination is often the first step during the diagnosis. Physical examination helps the surgeon identify visible symptoms like swelling, bruising, or any kind of deformity. Besides this, the range of motion of the affected shoulder is also checked.

Imaging tests like X-ray, MRI, or electromyography are done to confirm what the condition is.

How Are Bankart Lesions Treated?

The treatment of Bankart lesions is done either surgically or without surgery, and that solely depends upon the severity noticed during the diagnosis.

Mild cases may be treated using targeted physical therapies and medication but, severe dislocations along with Bankart Lesions require surgery. Depending upon the condition, the surgeon decides whether arthroscopy or open surgery should be done. Several other tests may also be performed by the surgeon to decide the feasible treatment option.
